Ham and Swiss Sliders

These ham and Swiss sliders are perfect for serving guests or your own family. They can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator or freezer, making them ideal for parties, lunch, dinner, or tailgating. I love pairing a couple with a bowl of homemade soup for an easy, satisfying meal. On those busy days—whether you’re prepping for company or just too tired to cook—they really come in handy.

These simple ingredients come together in a short time for  make ahead sweet and savory ham and Swiss sliders loved by kids and adults:

  • Sweet rolls – I like King’s Hawaiian rolls.
  • 2 sticks butter
  • 3 Tbs. yellow mustard
  • 2 tsps. onion powder – onion flakes would work just a well
  • 2 tsps. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 lb. deli ham
  • 1/3 pound Swiss cheese
  • Deli ham – one or two large slices (1 lb.)

Be sure that the butter is soft, but not melted. It should be easy to spread.

The ham and Swiss should be processed together in the food processor and finely shredded.

TO FREEZE:

First place rolls in the freezer uncovered after you add the butter topping.  Let the butter topping freeze, then wrap in plastic wrap, and return to the original package. When ready to serve, thaw in the refrigerator overnight or for 1-2  hours. Bake in preheated 350-375 degree F oven covered for 8-10 minutes, and then uncover and bake for 4-5 minutes more. Description

Need a crowd-pleasing, family-friendly make ahead option for lunch, a party, or tailgate? These ham and Swiss sliders are just the thing. Simply slice your favorite rolls, layer with shredded ham and Swiss, and finish with a savory buttery topping.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 48 rolls ( I used Hawaiian rolls.)
  • 2 sticks butter, softened
  • 3 Tbs. mustard
  • 2 tsps. onion powder
  • 2 tsps. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 pound ham, cut into chunks
  • 1/3 pound Swiss cheese

Instructions

  1. Soften the butter in microwave until spreadable
  2. Add mustard, onion powder, and Worcestershire sauce to the butter.
  3. Mix together until well combined.
  4. Add ham and Swiss cheese to the food processor and shred.
  5. Slice party rolls in half and lift off the tops.
  6. Spread ham and Swiss mixture evenly over the bottom half.
  7. Set the tops back in place and cut into individual rolls so that guests can easily serve themselves.
  8. Brush the butter topping evenly over the rolls.
  9. At this point you can freeze for later use, refrigerate for a few hours, or bake in a preheated 400 degree F oven until heated through and the cheese is melted (about 10 minutes).
  10. Then uncover and bake an additional 4-5 minutes until the top is slightly browned.

Notes

  • I like the Hawaiian rolls for this recipe.
  • I used a thick slice of honey roasted deli ham.
  • For the Swiss, I just used sandwich slices because my grocery store did not have a Swiss block stocked. A Swiss block would work just as well.
  • These turn out very well if made ahead and frozen. Be sure to cover well with plastic wrap and place back in original wrapping.
