Description

Growing up, I remember having boiled cabbage with bacon and seasonings, and that was okay, but this recipe has a better texture and much more flavor. My son made this for us when he was staying with us during Covid days, and I’ve been making it ever since.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large head of lettuce, chopped
  • 3 slices bacon, chopped
  • 2 Tbs. butter
  • 1 large onion, dice
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp. onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp. creole seasoning
  • 1/8 tsp. paprika

Instructions

  1. Place the bacon in a large stockpot and cook over medium high heat until crispy.
  2. Add butter, onion, and garlic, and cook until onion caramelizes.
  3. Add cabbage and stir for about 10 minutes.
  4. Add salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, creole seasoning, and paprika. Stir.
  5. Simmer over low heat. Cover and cook for about 30 minutes. Stir occasionally.

Notes

You can add more bacon if you’d like even more bacon flavor. I’m trying to keep it healthy, so didn’t want to add too much, just enough to season.  You can also add more creole seasoning, if you like it more spicy.

This Southern Fried Cabbage is  a healthy and delicious way to add more vegetables to you plate. This goes great with chicken, pork, turkey, or beef.
